While setting up this particular day I saw a name on the reservations list that seemed familiar but I wasn't sure. The name was Eugene Record. My co-workers didn't pay attention to names but this was really working on that `I know this name` nerve. When the Admissions Clerk came in to let us know the patient had arrived I told her `I'll take the patient`. She and everyone was surprised because although we did register patient's when clerks were overloaded this was not the case today. When I arrived in the patient area I immediately recognized Mr. Record and almost fainted. I had been a fan of the Chi-Lites since age 13...I felt this was meant for me to meet an icon and idol of so many years. He was the most pleasant courteous humble being I'd encountered in my life. I've met other celebs and they were kind and polite but Mr. Record's demeanor was most genuine and I felt the Christian Love of his aura and I felt blessed to have met him. My best wishes to his family and know that he touched many people even if he didn't know them. And by the way I registered him and had a perpetual smile on my face during the entire interview and the rest of my day that day. THANK YOU MR. RECORD. You are not phsically present but yet you are teaching me something everyday & I'm taking it all in. I wish that I was old enough in the 70's to see you perform on stage with the rest of the Chi-Lites but I was only a baby so I have no memory of you on stage.I've done a lot of research of the Chi-Lites & found out that you guys were on Soul Train a lot I never got a chance to see any of them nor the Flip Wilson show performance. So if I could have one thing that I don't have now it would be to have some footage of you performing with the group.I have a few cds of you singing with them but I wanna SEE you singing with them I wanna SEE the way you looked the way you dressed the way you wore your hair & the way you moved basically I wanna SEE you dad.I wanna build my own personal memorial of you & your accomplishments so that I'll always have you close by to motivate & inspire me to keep on working toward my goals no matter what.Well dad that's all I wanna say for now you rest in peace & I'll talk to you later.Love always your son Irving/If anyone knows where I could get such footage of my dad performing with the Chi-Lites on Soul Train or anywhere else please E mail me with this info & I thank you all.I hope I didn't bring any of your spirits down but I had to get this off my chest. I still play my Chi-Lites records and CD's and I still marvel at the words written by Eugene and the Chi-Lites in the 1970's in particular. I still get goosebumps by hearing his voice. I have loved the Chi-Lites ever since I was a girl of 13 living in DC and slowdragging to Oh Girl at house parties! I had the great pleasure of meeting all of the Chi-Lites at the Carter Barron in Washington DC. They were wonderful. They talked to me and shook my hand and Eugene even hugged me (although that part of the story may just be a dream) I remember vividly that Marshall Thompson had a broken arm and Squirrel smiled at me and Eugene smiled too and even asked me a few questions. He was the most beautiful man I had ever seen. I always felt that we had a connection after all my name was the same name as his wife's! I will always miss him but I Know that I will always groove to the music and continue to marvel at the great song writing that came from his heart. I hope his family is doing well and that the remaining members of the Chi-Lites are keeping his memory alive. Location: Soul Jam at the Tropicana July 22 2006 e-mail: Philadelphia PA Submitted: Mon Jul 24 10:51:47 2006 EST Comments: Hello: Once again what can I say about the Soul Jam Show at the Tropicana in Atlantic City NJ on July 22 2006. First let me say that I have been attending these shows for the pass 6 years but this show has got to be one of my favorite shows ever. I had the pleasure of seeing the Persuaders perform their hits including my favorite It's A Thin Line Between Love and Hate which they tore up!. The Delfonics featuring William Hart were outstanding and had the audience spellbound. Bloodstone in rare form singing their hits had the audience full attention. They sound the very same way they did 20 years ago which is incredible. Then came my ChiLites. This group knows how to make an appearance. The ChiLites as I say everytime I write about them are the cleanest group out there. They were thirty years ago and they still are to this day. Frank Reed as usual was incredible with his vocals. Marshall is a wonderful performer and then there's Robert `Squirrel` Lester who is and will always be my favorite ChiLite. This man has this tremendous energy on stage. They performed so many favorites of mine and in deed put on a show. And then it was time for the Stylistics who has the ability to capture the audience and bring them right into their performance. This show was off the chain trust me. I have never enjoyed a Soul Jam as much as this one. I want to thank all the performers for putting on such a great show and for the entertainment they provide their fans each year. And even though with each year that passes we all turn just a little bit older I thank God that he has substained us each year and allowed the performers to put on such a show and allowed people like myself a true fan of Soul Jam to be able to attend this show. Thank you God Bless You and I look forward once again to attending this show at the Tropicana next year. You guys gave a great performance as usual. I just want to say thank you for an awesome DVD. Your new DVD provided me with the cherished memories of the group from back in the day up thru now. It shows new creativity plus the warm romance and love songs of the past. You change with the times but manage to keep the originality you are known for. The new songs are right on the money. The old songs are unforgetable heart-trobbing classics. This new DVD is a memory treasure that everyone should have because it represents the biography of some fabulous entertainers that still manage to touch your heart and soul. I'm sure glad I have it. It is also a wonderful memory keep-sake for the loss of The extraordinary multitalented Mr.Eugene Record. You guys keep love and romance alive with your classic talent. When I reached home, something within me said, see if they have a Website. Sad to say that only today, I learned about the passing of Eugene. We, The Larks, lost Don Julian in 1998 and I can truly say, that I share your pain as a group. There is a void that you feel on stage and I trust that you have been sucsessful in filing that void because, the music must go on. No one can replace Eugene. He was an intrigal part of the harmony that was the The Chi-Lites. But what is yours and only yours to share must continue. We first worked together in Chicago at the Royal Theater in 1965. We were once again on the same stage at the Blockbuster Pavillion in Devore, California 30 years later. Of all the groups appearing that evening, I derived such great pleasure at working with you gentleman again. As usual in show business, you were headed out in one direction and we another. But I want you to know, that seeing you all together and intact as a group spoke volumes about your organizational and leadership skills. That wonderful public that has sustained us over the years have no idea how much work and effort it takes to keep a performing group together for over 40 years. My hats off to you Marshall. Well done, well done, well done. Let me know when you are coming West Coast again. I would love to catch your act from the front of the stage as opposed to from the backstage wings. I am no longer performing so I am free to attend. Yours Truly, Ted Walters, First tenor, The Larks & Don Julian and The Meadowlarks.
