I never have seen the group in person but if there are any future tour dates for North Carolina or Georgia....I will definitely be there.

Comments: The Chi-Lites are one of my MOST FAVORITE singing groups. I was hooked from Let Me Be the Man My Daddy Was for 1969 was the year MY dad died when I was only twelve years old. Have You Seen Her started me on my quest for love! By 1976 I was asking `Have you seen her?` because The Devil was Doing His Work and I didn't know that There Will Never Be Any Peace (Until God Is Seated At MY Conference Table). I could not find Happiness Being Lonely. Yes the Chi-Lites are a part of me.

Comments: Hi Marshall
Just had to pass on my condolences re: the passing of Squirrel which I've only just read about. Don't know if you remember me but I was always at your shows when you all played over here during the late 70s and early 80s in Manchester - your shows were pure magic. Different line up now but I'm sure the sound is still as fantastic as ever. Anyway just wanted to send my regards and wish you and the Chi-lites all the best for the future.

Your Cousin was my music director when I was sining with the Symbolics And one day I was giving you a ride from you Uncle's Hotel you told me The reason I hadn't made it as a singer is because I quit. That same year i went back to school graduated 4 years later with honors and became a Film Actor (Colors) Screenwriter (Posse) Singer (A Town Called Big Nothing) with Elvis Costello TV Actor (Pushing Daisies) Author (PEP for Christian Entertainers) Any thing I start to day I finish. Your comment stuck with me. 'YOU QUIT` Thank you my friend Shalom

Comments: Frank Reed!
We attended Morgan Park high school together back in the early 70s and I totally remember how much you loved the Chi-Lites way back then in 1972. I was also totally taken by your illustration skills.

In 1996 I was in an auto accident and you connected with my father in Chicago and called me at the Portland OR hospital where I was getting used to my new life as a paraplegic. That is when you told me the story of having become a member of The Chi-Lites. Your story seemed amazing to me and actually helped me through my life changing event. I got a chance to see you about a year and a half later at my father's house on the South side of Chicago. I am very disappointed that I have lost track of you then.

I am now working on a book that I think you would truly be interested in and it will also feature a few of the drawings you and I worked together as teenagers. I would sincerely love to be able to share all of this with you because you has been so inspirational to me through the years...you and your family.

I am trying to get in touch with you and I would be eternally grateful if you would contact me!

Thank you kindly
Rupert Kinnard

And that harmony is off the chain as always that Chi-Sound perfection; like only you guys can present it. Keep on sending us the love and we'll be sending it right back to you. Because no one does it better than you guys! For you are surely love personified!!!

Love ya
Wanda Wilson

P.S. I hope that you liked the DVD of our previous
interview; I am sure that it brought back many
great memories from the past! I hope to hear
from you soon blessings!

It was pretty awful from where we were seated (we were in section 114 right above the technicians who were constantly pushing buttons and screwing up the sound). Nevertheless we still had a good time. We are very excited to hear that you will be inducted into the Rock Hall of Fame. You guys truly deserve it and it is about time. God bless and hurry back to Cleveland.

Comments: Last night (March 2nd 2007)my Sister & I saw the 70's Soul Jam in Charleston South Carolina at the Gaillard Auditorium. Appearing were the Chi-lites The Manhattans The Delphonics and The Stylistics. That show brought back so many memories but most importantly everyone in the audience remembered that at one time `Music was Music`. It told a story. There was love in the air not music that talked about guns violence and cursing. Everyone sang along with the groups and it didn't matter whether we were off key or not we all had a good time. If I'm not mistaken I believe the Chi-lites said they had been in the business for 47 years and the Stylistics 39 years. Now that is what I call longevity (smile). Keep up the good work guys and may God bless all of you for a long time to come.

Comments: I woke up this morning trying to remember a song and as I walked to the shower I started singing Hot on a Thing (Called Love). I have no idea why I have not heard the song in ages and now I can't get it out of my head. I have a few Chi-Lite songs on my oldies CDs but not that one so I am going to buy a greatest hits CD with that song on it.

Comments: Have long been a Chi-Lites fan. I remember when I first saw them at my Thornton High School ('69)in Harvey IL w/Barbara Acklin. I most recently saw them here in Houston in November '06. I still have 33rpm albums I play to this day from `Give It Away` to `Bottoms Up`. Thank you for the special songs that have touched my heart since my youth. `Give Me A Dream` is the song that pretty much sums it up. I've done some singing on the road and to do it for as long as you guys have is remarkable. God Bless and take care.

Comments: I am sure that today’s generation will in 20 or 30 years feel a welling up of memories when sounds of today’s music blast through their ears by way of some future medium. However I can not imagine those future replays of today’s sounds invoking anything within today’s generation close to the deeply heart and soul stirring feelings that I am blessed to experience each time the beautiful harmonic notes and lyrics of such groups as the Chi-Lites drift through my ears and stimulate memories…of The Apollo The Uptown The Capital The Regal and even The Wonder Garden as well as Club Harlem where after a set it was not unusual for a group member or the whole group; (The Chi-Lites Blue Magic Delfonics Intruders H M & The Blue Notes etc etc) to except an offered of a drink at your table or at the bar and shoot the bull between sets.
Today those up close and personal type of shows and the ‘blue light’ house parties are but distant memories for me. But I am blessed to be alive and employed here in Atlantic City as a Stagehand. And though many of the originals members of the groups have passed on to a Higher Stage the music is being carried on. And to the Chi-Lites and each and every other group that carries on that traditional sound
“Thank you for the memories and with God’s Grace may you all keep-on-keeping-on.”
I am just one of many in black-in back of stage I just have a tear and a smile when I working a 60’s & 70’s shows here in Atlantic City NJ

With the acquisition of two of my former bandmates Marvin Weatherspoon [keyboards] and Greg Lee [bass]The Chi-Lites are going to blow-up all over again. I had the pleasure of sharing the stage with the legendary performers in Chicago and I was seriously blown away. The Chi-Lites rule. Gentleman keep on keepin' on.

Comments: Between the years of 1978 and 1984 I worked at Michael Reese Hospital in the Admissions Dept Bed Control area. While setting up this particular day I saw a name on the reservations list that seemed familiar but I wasn't sure. The name was Eugene Record. My co-workers didn't pay attention to names but this was really working on that `I know this name` nerve. When the Admissions Clerk came in to let us know the patient had arrived I told her `I'll take the patient`. She and everyone was surprised because although we did register patient's when clerks were overloaded this was not the case today. When I arrived in the patient area I immediately recognized Mr. Record and almost fainted. I had been a fan of the Chi-Lites since age 13...I felt this was meant for me to meet an icon and idol of so many years. He was the most pleasant courteous humble being I'd encountered in my life. I've met other celebs and they were kind and polite but Mr. Record's demeanor was most genuine and I felt the Christian Love of his aura and I felt blessed to have met him. My best wishes to his family and know that he touched many people even if he didn't know them. And by the way I registered him and had a perpetual smile on my face during the entire interview and the rest of my day that day. THANK YOU MR. RECORD.

You are not phsically present but yet you are teaching me something everyday & I'm taking it all in. I wish that I was old enough in the 70's to see you perform on stage with the rest of the Chi-Lites but I was only a baby so I have no memory of you on stage.I've done a lot of research of the Chi-Lites & found out that you guys were on Soul Train a lot I never got a chance to see any of them nor the Flip Wilson show performance. So if I could have one thing that I don't have now it would be to have some footage of you performing with the group.I have a few cds of you singing with them but I wanna SEE you singing with them I wanna SEE the way you looked the way you dressed the way you wore your hair & the way you moved basically I wanna SEE you dad.I wanna build my own personal memorial of you & your accomplishments so that I'll always have you close by to motivate & inspire me to keep on working toward my goals no matter what.Well dad that's all I wanna say for now you rest in peace & I'll talk to you later.Love always your son Irving/If anyone knows where I could get such footage of my dad performing with the Chi-Lites on Soul Train or anywhere else please E mail me with this info & I thank you all.I hope I didn't bring any of your spirits down but I had to get this off my chest. Much Love & Respect to the Chi-Lites & all their fans.

Comments: A year later and I still miss Eugene Record and think of him often. I still play my Chi-Lites records and CD's and I still marvel at the words written by Eugene and the Chi-Lites in the 1970's in particular. I still get goosebumps by hearing his voice. I have loved the Chi-Lites ever since I was a girl of 13 living in DC and slowdragging to Oh Girl at house parties! I had the great pleasure of meeting all of the Chi-Lites at the Carter Barron in Washington DC. They were wonderful. They talked to me and shook my hand and Eugene even hugged me (although that part of the story may just be a dream) I remember vividly that Marshall Thompson had a broken arm and Squirrel smiled at me and Eugene smiled too and even asked me a few questions. He was the most beautiful man I had ever seen. I always felt that we had a connection after all my name was the same name as his wife's! I will always miss him but I Know that I will always groove to the music and continue to marvel at the great song writing that came from his heart. I hope his family is doing well and that the remaining members of the Chi-Lites are keeping his memory alive.

Comments: Hello:
Once again what can I say about the Soul Jam Show at the Tropicana in Atlantic City NJ on July 22 2006. First let me say that I have been attending these shows for the pass 6 years but this show has got to be one of my favorite shows ever. I had the pleasure of seeing the Persuaders perform their hits including my favorite It's A Thin Line Between Love and Hate which they tore up!. The Delfonics featuring William Hart were outstanding and had the audience spellbound. Bloodstone in rare form singing their hits had the audience full attention. They sound the very same way they did 20 years ago which is incredible. Then came my ChiLites. This group knows how to make an appearance. The ChiLites as I say everytime I write about them are the cleanest group out there. They were thirty years ago and they still are to this day. Frank Reed as usual was incredible with his vocals. Marshall is a wonderful performer and then there's Robert `Squirrel` Lester who is and will always be my favorite ChiLite. This man has this tremendous energy on stage. They performed so many favorites of mine and in deed put on a show. And then it was time for the Stylistics who has the ability to capture the audience and bring them right into their performance. This show was off the chain trust me. I have never enjoyed a Soul Jam as much as this one. I want to thank all the performers for putting on such a great show and for the entertainment they provide their fans each year. And even though with each year that passes we all turn just a little bit older I thank God that he has substained us each year and allowed the performers to put on such a show and allowed people like myself a true fan of Soul Jam to be able to attend this show. Thank you God Bless You and I look forward once again to attending this show at the Tropicana next year.

Comments: Hey Marshall
It was great running into you in Toledo Ohio this past May. You guys gave a great performance as usual. I just want to say thank you for an awesome DVD. Your new DVD provided me with the cherished memories of the group from back in the day up thru now. It shows new creativity plus the warm romance and love songs of the past. You change with the times but manage to keep the originality you are known for.
The new songs are right on the money. The old songs are unforgetable heart-trobbing classics. This new DVD is a memory treasure that everyone should have because it represents the biography of some fabulous entertainers that still manage to touch your heart and soul. I'm sure glad I have it. It is also a wonderful memory keep-sake for the loss of The extraordinary multitalented Mr.Eugene Record. You guys keep love and romance alive with your classic talent. Squirrel you still make the girls scream. Marshall you are just a musical genius.
Love You guys

I just which The Chi-Lites could had performed a little longer and We could have set a little closer to the stage for a better view. The songs brought back a lot of good memories.
I treasure my DVD my picture drawn by Frank Reed of The Chi-Lites my CD and the wonderful memories of attending the show. Thanks Frank and Marshall for signing it and for being so polite and nice.
I have been telling everyone how good the DVD is and Frank's CD. I've even played it while working so some of my Tax Clients who couldn't attend the show got to see some of what they missed. I might need to puchase backups since I play it so much.
I have always been a fan of The Chi-Lites and I really enjoyed the show. You still sound and look great. Just seeing you perform again and talking with you for a brief moment left a lasting impression that I will never forget.

Comments: Marshall,

I was listening to the car radio and the station was featurnig the Chi-Lites. When I reached home, something within me said, see if they have a Website. Sad to say that only today, I learned about the passing of Eugene. We, The Larks, lost Don Julian in 1998 and I can truly say, that I share your pain as a group. There is a void that you feel on stage and I trust that you have been sucsessful in filing that void because, the music must go on. No one can replace Eugene. He was an intrigal part of the harmony that was the The Chi-Lites. But what is yours and only yours to share must continue.

We first worked together in Chicago at the Royal Theater in 1965. We were once again on the same stage at the Blockbuster Pavillion in Devore, California 30 years later. Of all the groups appearing that evening, I derived such great pleasure at working with you gentleman again. As usual in show business, you were headed out in one direction and we another. But I want you to know, that seeing you all together and intact as a group spoke volumes about your organizational and leadership skills. That wonderful public that has sustained us over the years have no idea how much work and effort it takes to keep a performing group together for over 40 years. My hats off to you Marshall. Well done, well done, well done.

Let me know when you are coming West Coast again. I would love to catch your act from the front of the stage as opposed to from the backstage wings. I am no longer performing so I am free to attend.

Yours Truly,
Ted Walters, First tenor,
The Larks & Don Julian and The Meadowlarks.

Comments: I have read several tributes to Eugene Record regarding his Chistianity, without the mention of how significant this song was to him called THERE WILL NEVER BE ANY PEACE. As a former Assistant to the Rev. Jesse L. Jackson, Sr, I was super shocked to get a call from Eugene Record to let me know that he was making an appearance at PUSH on one one Rev. Jackson's programs calling for peace in the world. We talked for a while on stage and he mentioned the significance of why he re-recorded the song because it was part of his mission as a Christian to let people know that there would be no peace on 79th Street on the Middle East without GOD at the conference table. So I just wanted the record to reflect that I was at least ONE person that Eugene Record told about the signicance of the song THERE WILL NEVER BE ANY PEACE until GOD was at the Conference table.

Know that the music of Eugene & The Chi-Lites continues to give people joy & entertainment. The youth of today are just beginning to discover what us old school R&B/Soul listeners already knew. The Chi-Lites' soulful sounds are a neccessity in anyone's music collection!
May God Bless all of you, in Jesus' name.

Comments: Hello:

First I would like to send my heartfelt condolences to the family of Eugene Record. He will truly be missed and I am sure he is singing to a higher power, and I am sure they are loving it. To the Chi-Lites I just want to thank you for another great show at the Tropicana in Atlantic City on Friday, July 22, 2005. What's left to say? You are impeccable and you guys just get better with time, (if that is possible) and each time I see you it's like the first time all over again. To the Chi-Lites I say stay, strong, stay well, keep touring because we love you. And I personally want to thank you for the music that I have enjoyed for years and for the opportunity to see you perform.

Comments: Mr. Record; You simply helped shape the life of this now 45 year old man in California. Living in a very abusive, poverty stricken family in No. Cal, music was my only escape to keep me going just another day. Armed only with an AM Radio and Turntable, I could ease the pain of watching my father slowly succumb to alcoholism, by switching on the Soulful Sounds of the Chi-Lites. You and Creadle Jones were my Heroes. To this day, I switch on those unforgettable tunes, and the problems melt away. Happily married now, (27) years, and a wonderful family! Thank you so very much for your music from No. Cal. Dennis Taylor

I wasn't even in my teens yet when Oh Girl and Have You Seen Her came out , but they and you became my favorites , right up until this day. The soul sounds that i heard at this concert are what this boy seeked out all his music loving life. Would definately seek out the Chi-Lites the next time they come close to my city. Comments: I was working at Borgata Casino in AC, New Jersey. Had pleasure of meetng Marshall when he stopped by our vendor table with Tara (and Floyd), looking for the production room. I had just been told the Chi-Lites were at the hotel about 30 minutes before...What a pleasant surprise it was to meet them; Marshall was a perfect gentleman! At the show the next night, the Chi-Lites were AWESOME - a word I don't use often! I think they got the biggest hand of the performers! Marshall allowed me to give him a letter I wrote, expressing some positive thoughts about their great music. NICE MAN!

Comments: Just wanted to say that I attend your shows whenever you are near my area. I was at the Soul Jam at the Tropicana Casino on August 23, 2003 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. You guys are the cleanest act around. You always look good and sound good. Not to take anything away from the rest of the group, but I could watch Robert "Squirrel" Lester forever. He really puts on a show, and I love to hear him sing "Oh Girl". I have sent him a couple of letters to your fan club address, but have never heard back from him, but that's alright. As long as the Chi Lites know that their music only gets better just as they do with time. Continue to share your music with us. Stay well, keep touring and hope to see you guys again soon!
